Hibs end of year up-date

Hibs end of year up-date

The fortunes of Hibs since I last wrote back in November have been up and down, as usual.

If you remember, we were top of the league. One week later we got beat by Dundee, the bottom team. Celtic won and went top again.

Since then, we’ve won one game and lost three in the league. So, we’ve gone down the table and are currently 4th, seven points behind Celtic.

At Christmas in Spain there is normally a two-week break from football, but in the UK it is traditionally a very busy time for football. Hibs have four games in twelve days, including playing Celtic at Easter Road and Hearts in the New Year derby at their stadium. It’s a moment of the year when a win or a loss can affect the final place of a team in the league. So, I hope we have some luck in the four games.

Speaking about Hearts and derby games, one fantastic thing happened this month. On Sunday 2nd December, Hibs played Hearts at Easter Road in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup – remember the cup we lost so disastrously to Hearts last season? Well, this time we won! Only 1-0, but it all counts. We got a little bit of revenge. It was the biggest crowd of the season so far – 17,052 supporters.

Unfortunately, a bad thing happened that day too. Remember Leigh Griffiths, the ‘pichichi’ of the league? Well, he got injured and hasn’t played any more games. Maybe that’s why we have been losing most of our games!

I saw the game in an Irish pub here in the centre of the city. It was one of the worst games of football I have ever seen in my life. Both teams were incredibly bad! It’s very hard to watch Scottish football when you’re used to watching Barça and Spanish games. Don’t worry, I still jumped and shouted and celebrated our great goal and win.

If I’m very lucky, I might be able to get a ticket for the Celtic game when I’m home for the holidays. If not, there’s always the TV.

I hope Hibs start the new year well; I hope Tito Vilanova recovers from his illness, poor man; and I hope you all have great holidays and an excellent 2013. It could finally be the year Hibs win the Scottish Cup!
