New Songs for 2013
Everybody enjoys listening to music so why not try using music to help you learn English? Songs are a great way to learn new vocabulary, structures and expressions. Song lyrics will stick in your mind along with the rhythms and melodies.
To help you we’ve chosen three new groups/singers that you’ll be hearing about soon based on tips from critics, broadcasters and bloggers in the UK. The videos are here and underneath each there’s a link to the lyrics:
Haim
Haim may be a three Californian sisters in a pop group now, but it wasn’t always that way. Originally they were part of a band with their parents called Rockinhaim. Now, despite the occasional gig with their mum and dad (there’s no hard feelings), the siblings are one of the most talked about tips for next year.
Their influences range from TLC to Britney, Destiny’s Child to The Strokes – all of which they channel into their slick brand of rock.
AlunaGeorge
London act AlunaGeorge have already been described as “lustrous” and “thrillingly futuristic” (The Guardian) in their first year together.
The pair met when George (producer) got in contact with Aluna (singer) offering to remix a track for her old band. They instantly had a connection. Having worked on a collection of songs together they first made waves with the release of the You Know You Like It EP back in April. The stylised, monochrome video for that track also became a viral hit.
A*M*E
18-year-old A*M*E makes no secret of her ambition to become a huge pop star. “This face is going to be everywhere,” she said in a recent BBC interview. “When you wake up, in your newspaper, on your toothpaste.”
Having moved from Sierra Leone aged eight, Amy Kabba’s first involvement with music came when she joined the school choir. Not long after, the Lewisham singer decided to “go solo”. She began writing her own songs and promoting her work via her own magazine (cheekily titled The A*M*E).
